The Accademia dell'Opera Italiana is proud to present the Viva Verdi Masterclass for its Young Artists, taking place in June 2025. This special masterclass, led by the esteemed Maestro Renato Balsadonna, will focus on opera scenes from some of Verdi's greatest masterpieces, including Don Carlos, Rigoletto, and La Traviata.

About Maestro Renato Balsadonna

Maestro Balsadonna is a world-renowned conductor and Verdi specialist. He has held prestigious roles, including Chorus Director at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and has worked with leading orchestras and opera houses globally, including Teatro La Fenice, the Glyndebourne Festival, and Wiener Staatsoper. With his unparalleled expertise in Verdi’s music, Maestro Balsadonna will guide our young artists through an immersive journey into the heart of these operatic treasures.

Focus of the Masterclass

The Viva Verdi Masterclass offers a deep dive into Verdi's musical and dramatic language. Participants will work on selected scenes from Don Carlos, Rigoletto, and La Traviata, focusing on:

  • Character Interpretation: Exploring the psychological and emotional depth of Verdi’s complex characters.

  • Musical Expression: Mastering vocal phrasing and dramatic dynamics to fully embody Verdi's intentions.

  • Ensemble Performance: Working on interactions between characters to enhance the authenticity of scenes.

Learning Opportunities

This masterclass is an exceptional opportunity for young artists to refine their craft under the guidance of a Verdi expert:

  • Direct Coaching: Maestro Balsadonna will provide one-on-one guidance, focusing on technical refinement and expressive artistry.

  • In-depth Scene Study: Participants will engage in rigorous scene work, emphasizing both vocal technique and dramatic interpretation.

  • Performance Showcase: The masterclass will conclude with a public performance where participants will have the chance to present their work.

Masterclass Schedule

The Viva Verdi Masterclass is a one-week intensive program held on June 7th and 8th 2025. Each day will include:

  • Morning Sessions: Group coaching on musical interpretation and vocal technique.

  • Afternoon Scene Work: Focused work on character development and dramatic portrayal.

  • Evening Ensemble Rehearsals: Working on dramatic flow and cohesion in preparation for the final performance.

The masterclass culminates in a public performance on June 9th in Lauderdale House at 13:00, where participants will present the Verdi scenes and Arias they've prepared, offering them a valuable stage experience and an opportunity to showcase their growth.

How to Apply

Eligibility: The Viva Verdi Masterclass is open to AOI Young Artists.

Application Requirements: Interested artists must submit video recordings of two Verdi arias along with a statement of motivation. All applications must be submitted by April 30, 2025.
