Hannah McKay, a young soprano from Northern Ireland, is currently in her second year of her Master's at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she studies under the tutelage of Janice Chapman. She eagerly anticipates starting the Opera Course at Guildhall in September 2024.
This year, Hannah reached the finals of the Irish Heritage Bursary Competition, marking her performance debut at Wigmore Hall. In February, she gave the UK premiere of Jessie Montgomery's "Lunar Songs" during a BBC Radio 3 Total Immersion Concert.
Hannah's recent concert engagements include performing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at Durham Cathedral, Handel's
"Messiah," Haydn's "Nelson Mass," and Vaughan Williams's "Sea Symphony." While at Durham University, she was the soprano solosit for Mozart's "Requiem" and Mendelssohn's "Elijah" at the Cathedral. In April 2023, she participated in a young artist masterclass with Rachel Nicholls and lain Burnside at the Ludlow English Song Weekend. She was also a member of the Samling Academy during her time as a student at Durham University.
In her operatic endeavors, Hannah recently covered the role of La Fata Azzura in the Guildhall Opera School's production of Respigh's "La Bella dormente nel bosco." Last academic year, she covered the role of Signora Guidotti in "I due timidi" and performed Suzel in "L'amico Fritz" in her first set of opera scenes in November 2022, followed by Ellen in "Peter Grimes" and Vitellia in "La Clemenza di Tito" in scenes in July 2023. This summer, Hannah is covering Suor Angelica for West Green House Opera as well as being their young artist. Her studies are supported by several scholarships.
Hannah is honored to be the Behrens Foundation Scholar and the Sidney Perry Foundation Scholar, in addition to receiving support from a private donor. She is the 2024 Boise Scholar, supported by the Boise Scholarship Foundation.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Hons) in Music from Durham University.
