Accademia dell’Opera Italiana Summer Opera School

We are thrilled to present a unique initiative in the heart of Nardò: the Accademia Dell'Opera Italiana, an Italian Opera Masterclass that promises to be an unforgettable experience for 12 exceptionally talented young artists from the top conservatories in London and Puglia. Taking place from August 1st to 15th, 2025, this immersive programme is set against the breathtaking backdrop of Puglia, Italy, and is dedicated to the meticulous study and performance of Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana.

Under the expert guidance of internationally renowned soprano and verismo specialist, Professor Nila Masala, participants will delve into the intense emotional landscape of this iconic opera. The masterclass will also feature the expertise of baritone Massimo Modoni, who will focus on vocal technique, and Brian Hughes, an accomplished accompanist and repetiteur, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.

Directed by Marco Bellussi, a seasoned director with a rich portfolio across Europe's finest theatres, the course will culminate in a series of three public concerts, with the grand finale being a staged production of Cavalleria Rusticana, performed all’Italiana, with grand piano, chorus and soloists. This performance will be a true highlight, showcasing the students' refined talents and their deepened understanding of Italian neo-realist music. Musical Direction will be by Italian Conductor Emanuela Di Pietro, who has managed some of the finest opera choruses in Italy, including La Fenice in Venice and Petruzzelli in Bari.

Participants will not only benefit from intensive musical and stage training but will also have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Italian culture through activities such as local cooking classes, language and gesture workshops, and guided tours of the region. The masterclass offers the rare chance to perform in multiple historic venues across Puglia with two different casts, as well as to take part in an operatic gala concert that will celebrate the best of 19th-century Italian repertoire.

The available roles include Santuzza (Mezzo or Dramatic Soprano), Lola (Mezzo), Turiddu (Tenor), Alfio (Baritone), and Mamma Lucia (Mezzo or Contralto). This course is a golden opportunity for emerging artists to hone their craft, gain invaluable stage experience, and immerse themselves in the rich traditions of Italian opera.

An Unparalleled Operatic Training Experience

The Accademia dell’Opera Italiana (AOI) Summer Opera School is a prestigious and fully funded program designed to cultivate the next generation of opera singers. Over two and a half weeks, participants engage in an immersive artistic journey, receiving intensive training from a faculty of world-class professionals.

This unique program combines rigorous vocal coaching, acting, and stagecraft with the rich cultural tapestry of Italy. Singers reside and study in the heart of Southern Italy, refining their artistry in an environment steeped in operatic tradition. Mornings are dedicated to musical and technical rehearsals, while afternoons focus on Italian language coaching and staging sessions.

Final Performances in Nardò

Culminating their intensive training, our Young Artists will present fully staged performances of Cavalleria Rusticana on August 14 and 15, 2025, at the historic Chiostro dei Carmelitani in Nardò, Puglia. This picturesque cloister, with its serene ambiance and historical significance, provides an enchanting backdrop for these operatic showcases. Located a short walk from Piazza Salandra, the heart of Nardò, the Chiostro offers an authentic atmosphere enriched by historic architecture and vibrant local culture.

Chorus Participation Opportunity

In a collaborative effort, two casts of ten phenomenal young artists will join forces with a chorus comprising semi-professional choristers from England, Ireland, Sardinia, and local Italian talent. Choral singers are invited to apply for this project, which includes a 10-day masterclass led by esteemed Chorus Master Emanuela Di Pietro from August 6th to 15th. The program fee is €425, excluding lodging. Participants will engage in daily rehearsals and perform in the staged productions at the Chiostro dei Carmelitani.

AOI is committed to nurturing exceptional talent by offering 5 full scholarships to outstanding young artists. These scholarships cover all tuition fees and accommodation, providing a comprehensive training experience. The remaining five artists can participate for an all-inclusive fee of €2,500, which includes tuition and shared housing accommodations.
